The majority of horses that arrive at Bransby come to us as welfare cases, meaning that they have suffered neglect or cruelty at the hands of humans. Sadly there are more than enough horses in urgent need of help to keep us very busy. Bransby’s sites in Lincolnshire and Herefordshire both have experienced staff who can investigate welfare concerns and we work with local authority inspectors and the RSPCA to address serious cases that may lead to legal action.

The rescue of a horse from neglect or cruelty is just the beginning. We then have to try and help the horse back to physical and mental health. Rehabilitation can take weeks, months or even years depending on the needs of an individual and what he or she has been through. Some horses can be transformed by good care, veterinary support and kind handling whilst others may never fully recover from their experiences. Many horses are rehabilitated to a point where they can go on to enjoy life in a carefully selected foster home, whilst those that are elderly, have ongoing health issues or remain very nervous will stay with us here at the Home. Deliberate cruelty is less common than neglect caused by ignorance or poor judgement. Bransby recognises that a lot of knowledge is required to look after equines properly and that no horse owner should ever feel that they have nothing more to learn. We are always happy to share our own expertise and experience with anyone who owns or looks after horses and we work hard ourselves to keep up to date with new ideas and developments that help us to do even more for equines.
