Sponsoring the Future of Equine Welfare
Bransby Home of Rest for Horses provides grants for the development of equine welfare. In 2006 the Home reviewed its policy on the type of grants it makes to individuals and other organisations. These fall into the following categories:
- Research Grants
- University Operational Awards
- Education Material Grants
The Council of Management considers grant applications at their April meeting, but can review such requests throughout the year. Applications should be made to Grants, Bransby Home of Rest for Horses, Bransby, Saxilby, Lincoln , LN1 2PH.
All topics will be considered, but projects researching laminitis, cushings or nutrition are encouraged. The basic criteria for applications is that they reflect the aims of Bransby and are non-intrusive.
Bransby Home of Rest for Horses founded in 1968 is home to over 270 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. The Home aims to prevent and relieve cruelty to horses and to protect them from unnecessary suffering. To promote knowledge of the proper care of horses amongst the public. To ameliorate pain and suffering amongst the horses in its care.

Research Grants
The Home awards scholarships to students attending UK universities and colleges undertaking projects connected with equine welfare.
- Applicants must be in permanent positions (or under written by permanent appointees) at their home institution.
- All projects must be non-invasive. Projects that are considered to be invasive will not be considered.
- Projects that require a Home Office Licence will not be considered for support.
- The research must be of quality science and produce benefits to equine welfare.
Format for applications:
- Maximum five pages of A4 (12pt, Times New Roman, Justified).
- Title
- Summary
- Proposed Project
- Itemised budget
- Statement of expected benefits to equine welfare
- Applicants CV to be attached, including list of publications and presentations at conferences.
- Include the following information.
- Support from other sources been/being sought; Include name and date of decision expected/outcome of decision.
- List previous applications by the principal applicant to the Home.
University Operational Awards
The Home awards capital grants to UK university departments and institutes that are undertaking projects connected with equine welfare.
Format for applications:
- Maximum three pages of A4 (12pt, Times New Roman, Justified).
- Title
- Proposed Project
- Itemised budget
- Statement of expected benefits to equine welfare
- Include the following information
- Support from other sources been/being sought; include name and date of decision expected/outcome of decision.
- List previous applications by the institution to the Home.
Educational Material Grants
The Home sponsors material for the promotion of responsible horse ownership, recently this included the Equine Industry Welfare Guidelines Compendium for Horses, Ponies and Donkeys. The Home is willing to consider other applications for publications for the promotion of equine welfare.
Format for applications:- Maximum two pages of A4 (12pt, Times New Roman, Justified).

- List previous applications by the institution to the Home.
GUIDANCE NOTES
- All applications must be made using the application format.
- Deadline for applications is to be confirmed
- All applications must be sent by recorded or guaranteed delivery to Grants, Bransby Home of Rest for Horses, Bransby, Saxilby, Lincoln, LN1 2PH.
- Please provide one paper copy and a copy on CD.
TERMS and CONDITIONS
REPORTS
- All projects selected for support must submit a written report within 6 months of starting the project and annually thereafter for review by the Council of Management.
- Student Scholarships can be up to three years in duration, with support reviewed annually.
- Projects should be completed in a single continuous period. Absences that may interfere with the completion of the project should be reported to the Home. Further conditions may be applied to the grant.
FINANCES
- This will be dependant on the type of grant awarded. For projects of 12 months duration or longer payment will be made quarterly in arrears.
- Financial reports should be made annually.
PUBLICATIONS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
- Bransby Home of Rest for Horses must be acknowledged in all publications and presentations arising from the project.
- Evidence that every effort has been made to publish the findings in peer-reviewed scientific press within four months of the completion date.
TERMINATION OF FUNDING
- The Council of Management reserve the right to terminate or withdraw in full or part funding at any time should the project be deemed to have deviated from the agreed proposal.
