New Arrival - Dickon

Thursday 24th January 2008

This week at Bransby we had a new arrival - Dickon the shire horse! Dickon is a 5 year old shire horse who has had problems with his teeth! He had a tooth removed but unfortunately the 'filling' did not work properly and kept getting infected and causing a nasty, painful swelling on his face.

Dickon was referred directly to the Newmarket Vets once signed over to Bransby, to avoid any risk of contamination with the Strangles outbreak here at the Home, but following his successful operation to 're-do' his filling, he has now arrived here at Bransby and will stay on our Isolation unit until he has been checked to ensure he is not a strangles 'carrier'.

Due to the 'staples' in his face, following surgery, he is not allowed to be turned out on his own until they are removed after the 1st of February, so he has to be grazed 'in hand' by his carers down at Isolation. As you can see from the photo, he is very big and strong, but has been extremely well behaved since his arrival and for the girls to handle and lead out.

He is a big lad, standing at over 18 hands and at 5 years old, he still has room to grow! He is a registered Shire and once his period in Isolation is completed, he will join some of the other Shire horses here at Bransby!

We will update the website on his progress and recovery.
